Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) | NorthStar Technologies – Oil & Gas Division
NorthStar Technologies performs API-Q2 certified magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to detect cracks, fatigue, and structural defects in oilfield flow control equipment.
Detect Cracks Before They Become Failures
In oilfield operations, even the smallest surface crack can lead to catastrophic failure under pressure.
At NorthStar Technologies – Oil & Gas Division, we perform API-Q2 certified Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to identify surface and near-surface discontinuities such as cracks, inclusions, and fatigue damage that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
This non-destructive testing (NDT) method is essential for verifying the integrity of flow iron, manifolds, valves, and other critical pressure control components before they are returned to service.
The Purpose of MPI Testing
High-pressure equipment in oil and gas operations experiences repeated stress, vibration, and exposure to harsh materials. Over time, these conditions can create small fractures or inclusions that compromise safety and reliability.
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) uses magnetization and iron-based particles to detect these flaws, revealing surface-breaking or near-surface defects with exceptional accuracy.
The result: early detection of weaknesses that prevents field failures, protects personnel, and maintains API-Q2 compliance.
How the Process Works
All MPI testing at NorthStar Technologies is conducted under our API-Q2 Certified Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring accuracy, traceability, and consistent results.
Step 1: Preparation
The surface is cleaned to remove oil, grease, and debris for optimal magnetic particle visibility.
Step 2: Magnetization
A magnetic field is applied to the component, either longitudinally or circularly, depending on the geometry and area of interest.
Step 3: Application of Magnetic Particles
Dry or wet magnetic particles are applied to the magnetized surface. These particles accumulate at areas of flux leakage — identifying cracks or inclusions.
Step 4: Evaluation
Technicians inspect the surface under proper lighting (visible or UV) to identify indications.
Step 5: Documentation and Certification
Each component’s inspection results are recorded, photographed, and included in a digital report as part of its API-Q2 certification file.
Applications
MPI testing is an essential part of recertification for:
- Flow iron and pressure lines
- Hammer unions and fittings
- Manifold and choke assemblies
- Valves and adapter spools
- Weld joints and structural steel
- Flanged and threaded components
This method ensures that pressure-containing and load-bearing parts are free of cracks, laps, seams, or inclusions that could cause failure during operation.
Benefits of Magnetic Particle Inspection
- Accurate Detection of Cracks and Flaws – Identify early-stage defects invisible to the naked eye.
- Non-Destructive – Detect flaws without damaging or altering the component.
- Applicable to Complex Shapes – Effective for irregular geometries such as elbows and fittings.
- Rapid Turnaround – Efficient testing process for high-volume recertification.
- Full API-Q2 Traceability – Documentation, photos, and test records retained for audit readiness.
Certified Quality Assurance
Every MPI inspection performed by NorthStar Technologies adheres to strict API-Q2 certified standards.
This ensures reliable, repeatable testing and verifiable documentation for every component processed.
